their first win against a top-10 op

PARIS -- Frances World Cup ambitions were dealt a significant blow when winger Franck Ribery failed to overcome a back injury and was ruled out of the squad on Friday. Fred Warner Jersey . Coach Didier Deschamps hoped Ribery would play a part in the friendly against Jamaica on Sunday, but the Bayern Munich winger was replaced by Montpellier winger Remy Cabella. Cabella was on the reserve list and has made just one substitute appearance for France. In another setback for Deschamps, attacking midfielder Clement Grenier was also withdrawn with a recurrence of a groin injury that has hampered him all season for Lyon. "We have to remain ambitious," Deschamps said. "Obviously with Ribery at 100 per cent were a better team, but well try and be a good team without him." The 23-year-old Grenier tore his right groin in training on Thursday and has been replaced by Southamptons Morgan Schneiderlin, who has never played for France. "Im very sad for them," Deschamps said. "I wasnt expecting this. If they were here its because I was counting on them, and the signs were very positive." Deschamps said both players were distraught when they realized they will not be on the plane to Brazil. "How do you think (they felt)? Theyre missing out on the World Cup," Deschamps said. "Of course there are worse things in life, but they are the first to be affected by it." The 31-year-old Ribery missed the previous two friendlies -- a 4-0 win against Norway and a 1-1 draw against Paraguay on Sunday -- but Deschamps was optimistic he would recover in time to play against Jamaica. Ribery had shown "positive signs of improvement" this week after increasing "the intensity of his work," Deschamps said. But that was when Ribery was training alone, and when he stepped up his routine in a bid to be ready to join in with his teammates, he suddenly pulled up in pain on Friday. "Franck had felt a lot better but his situation got much worse as we started to try and get him to take part in collective training," Deschamps said. "He is unable to train for a few weeks now and even less so to play." His final appearance of the season for Bayern was as a substitute in the German Cup final win against Borussia Dortmund on May 17. He had been rested since the 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the return leg of their Champions League semifinal on April 29. Ribery has 16 goals in 81 appearances for France and is the teams best attacking player. That mantle now rests with Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Ribery was third to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in voting for the worlds best player in January. It is a particularly bitter blow for Ribery considering how he had turned public opinion back in his favour, following a spectacular fall from grace at the last World Cup in 2010, when he was perceived to be a ringleader of Frances infamous training ground strike and banned for three matches by the French Football Federation. Deschamps must wait for FIFAs medical officers to validate his request to include Cabella and Schneiderlin in his World Cup list. They were set to join up with the squad at the Clairefontaine training camp late Friday. France flies out to Brazil on Monday, with spirits dampened following the loss of their talismanic player. Hugh McElhenny Jersey . There was little fanfare, though, when the Yankees captain was taken out of his final regular-season Subway Series game in the eighth inning. Jeter watched the last four outs from the bench, pulled off the field during a double switch Thursday night as the Yankees held off the Mets 1-0. Colin Kaepernick Jersey ." Bach is in Rome for the European Olympic Committees general assembly and meetings with Pope Francis. He also visited with Italian Premier Enrico Letta. "The prime minister appeared to be interested in a bid from Italy for 24, because he has realized that the games can serve as a catalyst for development for a city and a country," Bach told The Associated Press on Saturday.CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Dallas Crawford knew Miami needed a big game from him after its top rusher went down to an early injury. He delivered with a performance that kept the 10th-ranked Hurricanes unbeaten -- barely. The redshirt sophomore ran for a career-high 137 yards, including the go-ahead 3-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left that gave Miami a 27-23 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night. Crawfords second short score ended a 90-yard drive by the Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who lost top rusher Duke Johnson to an early injury. But Crawford topped his season rushing totals in one game, carrying the ball 33 times and scoring twice in the final quarter to help the Hurricanes avoid a big upset against the desperate Tar Heels (1-5, 0-3). "Were resilient," Crawford said. "Weve been through a lot over the years. It took a long time to get to this point. In years past, we probably would have lost this game. But its all about believing, and thats what we did tonight." Miamis players certainly had every reason to believe this just wasnt their night. Johnson left in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury, starting a run of injuries that also included starting receiver Phillip Dorsett suffering an apparent left knee injury that had him standing on the sideline with crutches by halftime. There was quarterback Stephen Morris throwing four interceptions to match his season total. There was a defence ranked among the nations best that gave up a season-high 500 yards and struggled to stop UNC tight end Eric Ebron. Yet at the end, the Hurricanes rallied from 10 down early in the fourth quarter to keep themselves in position for a Coastal Division crown and an appearance in the ACC championship game -- though they still have games against No. 5 Florida State and No. 19 Virginia Tech. "Theres no turning back for this group right now," Miami coach Al Golden said. "Theyre not turning back. Theres no finger-pointing. Theyre too invested in each other and in what theyve given and what theyve sacrificed to turn baack. Jim Plunkett Jersey. "I told them all week we were going to have to win this game by playing until there were four zeros, and that was right until the very end." Thats when Miami got the stop it needed, with Bryn Renners final heave into the end zone from the Miami 28 falling incomplete on the final play. It sealed the latest stinging setback for the Tar Heels, who entered the year with hopes of winning the division but now find themselves off to their worst start since 2006. They led this one 23-13 early in the fourth only to see Crawford score twice in the final 11 1/2 minutes to erase the deficit. North Carolina was playing only the second Thursday night home game in program history, breaking out black helmets and uniforms for a night it billed as "Zero Dark Thursday" all the way back in April. And the Tar Heels nearly earned their first win against a top-10 opponent since beating then-No. 4 Miami here on a last-second field goal in 2004. Instead, the Hurricanes are 6-0 for the first time since that season. "Weve got a bunch of guys hurting in that locker room down there," second-year UNC coach Larry Fedora said. "A bunch of guys that played their tails off tonight, gave everything they had, they did everything we asked. ... Just a tough one to swallow for us right now." Ebron finished with eight catches for 199 yards -- a single-game record for North Carolina tight end -- and a 71-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first quarter. But Ebron had just two catches after halftime, while the Tar Heels settled for three field goals on drives that pushed inside the 20 on the night. Miami got a boost when Ladarius Gunter returned a blocked field goal 67 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Crawford kept the offence moving even as Morris kept turning the ball over against the Tar Heels maligned defence. "Obviously, things went terribly wrong for me offensively," Morris said. "Our biggest focus was just trying to put that behind us and focus on this last drive, really." ' ' '
